The Ascent
Liz decided she wanted to try the Camp Muir hike with a snowboard, so we rounded
up a crew to make the attempt. This included a lot of Erics: Eric and Kathy
from previous hikes (see
Climbing Mt. Thorp - July 2000
), Liz and her friends from work
Eric and Marilyn, and Eric, Marie, and Peter who joined us at Muir.
The weather forecast for the 30th was always dubious, with chances of showers
and heavy clouds. But the day turned out clear and hot.
I took surprisingly few pictures. But getting the camera in and out, particularly
with a snowboard bungied to my backpack, was a huge pain.
I have more pictures of us at lunch, however they all seem to involve Eric and
Kathy in various stages of undress, and I don't want to have my web account
revoked for those sorts of pictures.
After lunch, we tackled the Muir Snowfield.
Camp Muir
Finally, around 2:45, we reached Camp Muir, 10088 feet according to my GPS, but
a little higher according to topographic maps.
We ate and drank a bit, then fell asleep in the sun. I woke up to someone
shouting my name. Eric, Marie and Peter had arrived.
The Descent
I don't have many pictures of the descent, because a) I was snowboarding, and
b) it's scenery we'd seen on the way up.
Finally! A picture of myself snowboarding. Thanks to Kathy for the photo.
